Why DNS and App Blocking Can Complement Each Other
Introduction
When attempting to restrict access to digital gambling platforms, relying on a single point of failure can leave you vulnerable. Tech-savvy users often find that layering multiple technical strategies—specifically combining DNS filtering with on-device application blocking—yields a much more robust protective net.
What is DNS Blocking?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is like the internet's phonebook. It translates a human-readable URL (like a casino website) into an IP address. A DNS blocker (whether configured on your home Wi-Fi router or via a service like NextDNS) intercepts requests to known gambling domains and returns a blank page instead of the site. It acts at the network level.
What is App-Level Blocking?
App-level blocking involves software installed directly onto your phone or computer (such as Gamban or Cold Turkey). This software monitors system activity and forcefully closes prohibited applications or browser tabs, operating entirely on the local device regardless of what network you are connected to.
How They Complement Each Other
DNS blocking is excellent for covering every device in a household (including smart TVs or guest devices) without needing to install software on each one, but it falls apart the moment you leave the house and use 5G. App-level blocking protects you on 5G and public Wi-Fi, but relies on software that might crash or require an update. Layering them ensures that if the app fails, the home router catches the slip; and if you leave the router's range, the app maintains the boundary.
Limitations
Managing two separate technical systems requires maintenance. Setting up router-level DNS can be technically demanding for some users. Furthermore, VPN usage can frequently bypass DNS filters entirely, meaning a user must also consider how to restrict VPN installations.
Responsible Use
Layered technical restrictions represent a strong "digital fence," but they are still just a fence. The motivation to climb the fence must be addressed through personal accountability and appropriate support systems.
